Hampton is one of the country’s foremost academically selective independent schools and this is an excellent opportunity to contribute to both the academic and co-curricular life at Hampton School.
Sport is a major part of both curricular and cocurricular life at Hampton School and plays an essential role in the physical, emotional and social development of every boy in the School. We are justifiably proud of the facilities, support, expertise and talent provided by the Sport and PE Departments. We are seeking to appoint a ‘top class’ individual to take on the role of full time, term-time Sports Assistant at Hampton School. The successful candidate will contribute to sporting and co-curricular programme across the school and will work closely with the Sport and PE department assisting with PE lessons and coaching across a number of different sports.
Alongside their work in Sport and PE, they be part of the School’s Cover Supervision team and will provide as a minimum the equivalent of two days of cover supervision across each week. We are committed to creating a safe, positive, challenging and disciplined learning environment where all players are given the opportunity to strive for excellence, with support from the coaching staff, who set the very highest standards.
The role would be ideally suited to a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with a passion for sport and young people and wishing to gain valuable experience in a School environment. Hampton is one of the country’s top sporting schools where many boys compete at regional, national and international level. The ability to coach either Rugby or Football is essential and the ability to contribute to Cricket or another summer sport such as Athletics or Tennis is desirable. The role is full-time during term time Monday to Friday from 8.30am up to 5.30pm several days per week (for after school coaching or fixtures).
The successful candidate must be available to work on Saturdays to accompany students to sporting fixtures, coaching junior teams and refereeing matches. You will also assist with cover for lessons across the School and may also be required to work at Hampton Pre-Prep and Prep School, if required. We encourage applications as soon as possible and the School reserves the right to commence or complete the interview process at any time prior to the closing date.
The Department
Hampton has an impressive and much-envied record of sporting success and high levels of pupil and staff participation. The School maintains high standards of sportsmanship and achieves national success across several sports, alongside fulfilling its commitment to offering boys of all abilities the opportunity to develop a love of sport. In the autumn and spring terms the main sports are Football, Rugby and Rowing; in the summer term they are Cricket, Rowing, Tennis and Athletics. In addition, the School offers a wide range of other sports, collectively termed Specialist Sports.
Choice is a central element of Hampton’s sporting programme in that boys are not obliged to play a particular sport at any stage of their education.
All boys in the First and Second Years (Years 7 and 8) are given a free choice of either Rugby or Football as their main sport; they play their chosen sport across the first two terms. All boys throughout the School have one Sports Afternoon. Additional practices for School teams take place at lunchtime, with senior boys also having some sessions after School. The Sport and PE Department currently consists of twelve full and part time teachers. Alongside school sport several members of the department, have responsibility for management of individual sports.
PE is taught from First to Fourth Year, with First Years receiving a double period per week and Second to Fourth Year a single period. First and Second Years are taught in form groups, whilst Third Years are timetabled, according to option groups, from other subjects. Currently the Fourth Year PE period has been added to Tuesday’s sports afternoon for the whole year group, where classes are divided, according to their sports options. Many lessons are team taught, allowing for teaching of smaller groups, using a variety of differentiation. The PE curriculum aims to teach pupils about health, exercise and fitness, whilst also allowing pupils opportunities to develop skills, knowledge and understanding, through a range of activities.
In addition to their PE lessons, pupils in the First to Fourth Year receive a double period for their sports afternoon. Those in the Fifth Year, join our senior sports afternoon and receive a whole afternoon of sport on Wednesdays.
A number of the department also teach in local primaries through our partnership programme, where our aim is to support not only primary school PE and Sport, but the teachers involved in curriculum delivery.
