Governor Expression of Interest Form Becoming a school governor is an incredibly rewarding way to make a real difference in the lives of children and young people, all while developing your own skills in a dynamic environment and giving back to your community. You'd be joining over a quarter of a million volunteers, making it the largest volunteer force in England's state-funded schools.
What Makes a Successful Governing Body?
For a school to thrive, its governing body needs a diverse mix of knowledge, skills, and experience. Ofsted, the education watchdog, highlights that the most effective schools are those with high standards of leadership and management, including strong governing boards.
Who Can Be a Governor?
You don't need to be a parent or have a formal background in education. Anyone over 18 with an inquiring mind, the ability to work in a team, and the time to attend half-termly meetings can become a governor. We're looking for individuals who can bring a range of professional and life experiences to the table, such as expertise in:
- Education
- Finance
- Human Resources
- Legal matters
- Estates Management
- Health and Safety
- Organisational Change
As a governor, you'll have the opportunity to use your professional and personal experiences to contribute to discussions and decisions; develop your skills in a board-level setting as well as support and challenge the school to drive improvements for the entire school community.
The Role of a Local Governing BodySchool governors support the Trust Board by focusing on the specific needs of their school, ensuring community engagement, and maintaining accountability. The local governing body has four key functions:
- Direction: Ensuring a clear vision, ethos, and strategic direction for the school.
- Performance: Holding executive leaders accountable for the school's educational performance, pupil outcomes, and staff performance management.
- Expenditure: Overseeing key budget variances and ensuring accountability for Pupil Premium and Sports Premium spending.
- Stakeholders: Making sure the voices of all stakeholders are heard.
Who We're Looking For - We welcome expressions of interest from anyone committed to education and aligned with our values. While experience in education, governance, leadership, or community work is a plus, it's not essential. We value diverse perspectives and a shared passion for improving outcomes for young people.
