Lathallan is a vibrant school committed to safeguarding and promoting the health and welfare of children. To support our school community we are looking to appoint a School Matron for an August 2025 start. The successful candidate will require an understanding of children and young people, have a warm and sympathetic personality and be able to demonstrate good sense- all while delivering a high-quality service of nursing care and health promotion to pupils and first aid care to all members of the school community.
Applicants should have excellent communication and inter-personal skills, be a good listener, flexible in outlook, reliable, warm and friendly in disposition, with sufficient sensitivity to show tact and diplomacy. A sense of humour, and a strong sense of calm in dealing with all situations are also fundamental to carrying out this job effectively.
You will require good organisational skills and initiative and the ability to work with a significant degree of autonomy, combined with strong ‘team player’ instincts and a good sense of school community. It is desirable for the postholder to have a nursing qualification however applicants with advanced first aid training will also be considered.
Location: Brotherton Castle, Johnshaven
Hours of work: Lathallan term and school in-service days only (36 weeks per year), 8:30a.m to 5p.m. Applications from job-share candidates will be considered.
Salary: £23,000 - £26,500 per annum dependant on experience

Job Description
Reporting to:
• Houseparent
Primary responsibilities:
• To nurture the individual child, promote the development of the whole person and support the general pastoral and supervisory work of the Houseparents and Heads of Pastoral Care as required.
• Administer first aid to pupils, staff and visitors in an emergency and to administer daily and irregular medicines as necessary as per the school’s medicines policy.
• Implement and maintain arrangements for First Aid provision to comply with statutory requirements to determine sensible and reasonable numbers of First Aid personnel within school, the training of First aiders, keeping records, accident reporting and maintenance of all first aid kits on site and in the school vehicles.
• To co-ordinate and manage the medical room including care of sick, injured, distressed individuals and maintain sufficient levels of medical supplies.
• Manage and where appropriate accompany boarding pupils to external surgeries, medical centers and hospitals as required.
• Manage and liaise with NHS Grampian for the delivery of Routine Childhood Immunisation programme and maintain links with healthcare professionals and the Boarding Schools Association as necessary.
• To be responsible for the update all Medical Policies and ensure that the school’s medical protocol is adhered to at all times.
• To co-ordinate/maintain the medical assessments, and health records for all students as necessary. To play an active part in the school’s health programme, including ‘hygiene’ and education with regard to adolescent changes, drugs, alcohol, etc.
• Introduce Child Health Screening for all new pupils, including J1 and S1 students, to ensure that health care needs are identified and met.
• Work with parents, carers, specialist health professionals and others to develop, implement and monitor in-school care plans for pupils with complex health needs and long-term medical conditions e.g. asthma, diabetes, allergies, eating disorders.
• To support boarding staff, including overseeing the presentation of the boarding house, boarders’ personal hygiene and ensuring boarding pupils’ clothing and bedding are kept clean and ironed.
• To be present in the dining room during lunchtimes and take an active part in encouraging healthy eating while monitoring any eating patterns giving concern.
• To complete all relevant forms following accidents and, if necessary, report to the Health and Safety Executive via the RIDDOR form.
• To deal with bodily fluids and spills in accordance with school policy.
• To maintain and improve professional knowledge and competence, keeping up to date with professional, clinical and nursing issues relevant to work in school.
• To provide teaching and peripatetic staff with pupil based medical information prior to school trips and outings.
• To support the PE and sports staff as necessary including the provision of medical and first aid cover for matches and games including weekend sports fixtures.
• To undertake all other duties, responsibilities and tasks as reasonably requested from time to time by the Housemaster, Heads of Pastoral Care and Headmaster.
