Support for Learning Teacher (approx. 0.3 – 0.4 FTE; 7.5 – 10.5 hours per week)
Hourly Rate: £40.16
Permanent (subject to successful completion of a probationary period)
Expected start date: Tuesday 19 August 2025
We are looking for an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and compassionate teacher to take over this important role at Dunedin. If you would relish the opportunity to be part of a small team dedicated to helping young people re-engage in education and achieve beyond their expectations, this may be for you!
Dunedin is a small, independent secondary school, providing an exceptional learning environment which allows young people to re-engage in learning.
Our pupils have usually had a difficult journey before they come to us, and most have not been able to thrive in a mainstream setting.
With a sensitive, nurturing and supportive approach, we aim to remove barriers in order to help our young people regain a love of learning, and a belief in themselves.
As our Support for Learning lead, you will join a hard-working and committed team, and work alongside us to provide individualised support for our pupils.
This is a part-time role, but it demands some flexibility, as the successful candidate must also be prepared to attend staff meetings which often take place in the evenings.
The role is currently for an estimated 7.5 -10.5 hours per week, ideally spread over three mornings, though this is to be negotiated.
All teachers must be registered with The General Teaching Council for Scotland.
Job Description:
This is a permanent, part-time role, subject to successful completion of a 3-month probationary
period.
The successful applicant’s main responsibility will be to organise and deliver individual and, occasionally, small-group instruction for pupils at the school with additional support needs. It is vital that he or she can engage with pupils who have been out of school for some time, and has an understanding of, and empathy with, young people who are highly anxious and who have found school life extremely difficult in the past.
Anxiety and a lack of confidence are significant barriers to many of the pupils who come to Dunedin. Many of them have had a negative school experience and the successful applicant must be sensitive to this. Other barriers to learning may include ASD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia
and ADHD. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in these areas.
The successful applicant will have autonomy to deliver support for learning, but he or she should always be sympathetic to the school’s aims and ethos and ensure that the pupils’ needs, and their well-being, are an integral factor in deciding upon their teaching approaches. This requires a great deal of flexibility by staff, who often need to adapt their plans on a day-by-day basis.
Applicants should also be aware that Dunedin is unique in that it is run on a collegiate basis with no head teacher.
In addition to their subject teaching, all members of staff participate in the day-today decision making and longer-term planning of the school. Decisions are made through consensus, and staff need to be open-minded, flexible in their thinking, and work well as a team.
Teachers also need to develop positive working relationships with pupils’ families, and any other professionals who may be working with them.
Opportunities also exist to take on additional responsibilities such as pastoral support for individual pupils.
This post is considered Regulated Work under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act, 2007, and successful candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme, or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check, prior to confirmation of employment.
Closing Date for Applications: Friday 13 June 2025
